Thursday, November 8 10:00 - 10:08am Laurel - Azalea
The Saturday golf report is on-line. Nice day, nice turnout (7) and rather good/bad day for golf. Good if you won and bad if you didn't. Since it was a rather slow day in the news room, we are going to take a little time to explore a couple of issues of interest, within the HHH & S realm, in a little more detail.
Individual Honors
Well boys and girls, the little Wofford Terrier of yesteryear (that would be Walter) swung the big point stick today. In spite of putting rather poorly, Walt held it together to surge to a +5 point total, shooting a 45-47=92 to win today's shootout. Hergy finished a distant second with a +3, shooting a 43-44=87 which was short in the point category, but was good enough to capture the non-paying and insignificant medalist honors. Notable rounds were kind of hard to come by today. Ernie shot a 43 and Dr. Larry managed a 42 on the back nine (Dogwood) to complete a listing of the better rounds today.
Interesting to note that the good Dr. had a rather "unique" turn around during his golfing experience today. Starting out rather slowly (gross understatement), Larry shot a 52 on the front only to recover and shoot a 42 on the back. An astounding shot difference of 10 strokes in one round . The RUMOR, and I say this again, the RUMOR milling around after this amazing turn-a-round today was that it had been reported that the Player of the Year (POY) Selection Committee was on the course today, observing and preparing their recommendations for the 2007 POY Award to be presented at the Annual Christmas Dinner. Larry, of course, is the current reigning and two time winner of this award, the most prestigious golf award presented to living legends residing in Aiken County.
When asked at the press conference after the round whether this had any impact on his round, Larry (with a little twinkle in his eye) indicated that he was clueless.....I mean clueless that the selection committee was around, etc, etc.
This reporter has learned via an unimpeachable source that there are currently three HHH & S members under consideration for the 2007 award. No word on whether or not Larry is among those under consideration.
Team Competition
---------------------------
Ha! What competition? The team of Larry, Walter and Hergy blew away the foursome of Ernie, Duke, Don and Jack to the tune of 18 points. The hot golfing threesome finished with a total of -1/2 on the front, a modest + 6 1/2 on the back for an18 hole total of +6. The competition (lack of) had a -10 on the front, but improved to a -2 on the back to finish the 18 at -12 (+6, -12 = 18 point victory spread). We are checking the archives as it is believed that this may be the largest margin of victory in the HHH & S competitions.
-------------
It was also reported that Don set a new driving distance record with an historic shot off of # 14 Dogwood. Apparently hitting the ball on the toe of his club, it has been reported that his ball travelled approximately six blocks and bounced across the bypass! Congratulations Don, that probably tops the errant shots of the fugitive from the Las Vegas Witness Protection Program, before he resorted to using "chicken sticks".
