The 2008 golf season got underway on Saturday with a rather limited field. Even though the temperatures hit the mid-fifties, only four golfers appeared for the opening session. A Nassau bet followed shortly, with the results outlined below. But first -

A word about the weather. I feel as though I am in a unique position to share with you my knowledge as a result of my geographical living experiences. I lived in the bitter cold for over fifteen years in Green Bay, WI., so I know about cold; I've also lived in the searing heat for over five years in Las Vegas, so I know about dry heat and wind. Plus, time was spent in the Northwest (Oregon-rain), Nebraska and Kansas (every other type of crappy weather imaginable), and of course Aiken (all of the above, including humidity :-).
My Analysis of Golf Weather in Aiken at Tee Time
*
Under 40 degrees
Stay home - even Eskimos wouldn't tee it up - this is COLD!
40 - 45 degrees
Iffy, but if warming up, play. If windy, stay home. This is chilly, not cold.
45 - 50 degrees
If sunny and calm, play. If windy, wear a wind jacket and play.
50 + degrees
What's the question? This is "primo" weather - not too hot, not too cold.
60 and above
If you're not playing, you're a wimp.
70 - 100 degrees
See "60 and above" - BIG WIMP
Over 100

Individual Honors
*
It was a very competitive foursome today. Hergy, playing after a three week hiatus, maintained his competitive edge and won the medalist honors today with a decent 41-44=85. His picture is here because Duh Editor's wife thinks he's cute and Duh Editor's thinks so. too. Ron had a 41 on the back (Azalea), but struggled early shooting a 48 on the front. Tommy had a respectable 42-44=86 and POYboy shot his handicap 48-44=92. Had we played "points", Hergy would have been +5, Tommy +2, and Larry and Ron pulled their points.*
Team Competition
*
Rather than "points", we played a $1 Nassau with Trash. Tommy/Larry vs./ Hergy/Ron with POY begging for and receiving 2 strokes for the 18.
*
It must be noted that "Bankerboy" is a Clemson follower and as team captain, influences the "competitive attitude" of his team. As we all know, most Clemson teams are fast starters and poor finishers - so too are their graduates.
*
Tommy and "his team" (POYboy) surged to a commanding lead after the first nine, up $3, they had a +4 lead, won two separate presses, and started talking "trash" at the turn. But true to their athletic heritage (can you spell T-O-M-M-Y (can't win the close ones) B-O-W-D-E-N), they ended up losing another close one. They lost the back nine by 5, lost the +4 advantage and the 18 (we win the 18 by +1), lost their press and we won the trash while they were talking "trash". As a result, we pocketed our hard earned $1 and merrily skipped (Ron said he learned how to skip at Wofford during his sophomore year) to our warm little homes. I will be taking my victory money to the bank on Monday. Ron, however, blew his on a new sweater.
*
It should be noted that Ron sank an 8' winning putt, under much duress, to cement the victory for the good guys! Great putt, Ron!!!

Note: On behalf of our politically correct friends, it should be noted that there may be some editorial bias in this blog.

It is supposed to be 70 degrees throughout most of next week. If you don't know what to do, check the chart above.
